Sponsorship FAQs
Can I choose my sponsored child?
No, your child will be assigned to you from one of our four God is Love schools. The reason we follow this process is both to protect the children and to ensure all of our students can find loving sponsors. However, we understand that you may, for example, want to sponsor a child from a specific God is Love school, or may be looking to sponsor a girl rather than a boy, or a child of a certain age. Our goal is to have every child sponsored, but we always take such considerations into account and aim to meet them whenever possible!
Will I be the only person sponsoring this child?
Our sponsorship program is focused on the building of a legitimate, long-term relationship between one sponsor and one sponsored child, which is why we aim to match each child with one specific international sponsor. However, a child may have an international sponsor (you) and a local sponsor, who supports with a smaller amount (around US$10.00). We do this in order to foster and encourage local churches and communities to share some ownership and involvement with our work.
In addition, we draw from our general donations fund to help cover any remaining costs; for example, in instances where the child’s family cannot contribute to tuition at all (i.e. not even a minimal amount).
Of course, another Friend of Hope may also be supporting your sponsored child’s family if they are sponsoring one of their siblings.
Does the child personally receive the sponsorship money?
No, sponsor donations are sent monthly to the Conviventia administrative office in Colombia by our US office staff.
Remember, your donations are funding our education, nutrition, medical-aid, and child protection projects, as well as our preventative family strengthening strategy, so that your sponsored child and their family can continue to benefit from them; as such, they must go through Conviventia’s channels.
How does communicating with the child/children work?
Our team will send you quarterly updates on the process of each child and will act as a bridge in enabling communication between each of our Friends of Hope and the child or children at the project. This can be done either via our US office or our secured digital communication platform, depending on your preferred method of communication. We can also arrange for Zoom/Video calls from time to time between you and your sponsored child and their family, simply request this and we will arrange it for you!
We live in a time where social networks have created the need for immediate and constant communication, but given the responsibility we have as an organization to ensure all actions respond to the plan tailored for each child and case, we do not promote direct communication via skype, facebook, twitter, email or other means. Internet represents a growing threat to children as many more technologically-driven forms of abuse are emerging. We therefore try to safeguard our children as much as possible.
Can I do more? What about sending gifts or supplies?
Yes, gifts are encouraged! However, it is necessary to send monetary gifts rather than packaged gifts due to high import duties, foreign government restrictions, and the possibility of loss or damage. Monetary donations can be made on our website or sent directly to the Conviventia US office. Our staff members in Colombia will purchase gifts on your behalf, but you can personalise your gift by sending a greeting card!
Sometimes your gift is the only gift a child will receive on their birthday or Christmas. We recommend US$10-$20 per occasion and limit these gifts to twice a year, because we realize generosity levels vary; this way, our gift fund is distributed across all students at the school to ensure everyone can have a gift. Birthday gifts should be sent at least one month prior to your sponsored child’s birthday and Christmas gifts should be sent in October.
You can also provide funds for a child or a group of children’s shoes and uniform once a year, and school supplies at the beginning of each school year. Additionally, if your child’s family needs a mattress, a bed, blankets, or one of their parents wants to start a home business in order to better care for their children, these are all opportunities for you to support!
Can I bring my child to the United States on holiday?
No, Conviventia does not have such program and does not encourage it. However, if a Friend of Hope sees the opportunity of sponsoring college education overseas for a child, we will work with them to make this a reality through our scholarship fund.
What happens if I decide to discontinue my sponsorship?
We will work to find this child a new sponsor as soon as possible so they can continue receiving a holistic education and further their development alongside Conviventia. You can discontinue your sponsorship at any time.
